Description:
Lauren Waszek, Ph.D. Dr. Waszek joins us via Zoom Tuesday, August 17 at 5:30pm from James Cook University in Queensland, Australia.
Seismology is the only tool to observe Earth’s interior, using energy from earthquakes to make detailed detections. By combining seismological observations with geodynamical modelling and mineral physics calculations we can understand the mechanisms of mantle convection. Learn about the relationship between seismic features in the upper and mid-mantle to its temperature and composition, and the resultant geodynamical influence for volcanism on Earth’s surface.
Dr. Lauren Waszek is a global seismologist currently lecturing in physics at James Cook University through an Australian Research Council Discovery Early Career Research Award fellowship. There, she researches mantle discontinuities, with a particular focus on the dynamics and composition of the structures associated with the Australian tectonic plate and recently joined the Mars InSight team.
